Why older residents are more vulnerable

Environmental cleaning and laundry

High-touch surfaces — handrails, door handles, bedside tables — collect germs. Set a cleaning schedule with named owners so nothing is left to chance:

Wipe high-touch surfaces at least once daily, and more often when a resident has an infection
Bag soiled linen separately and wash it at an appropriate temperature
Separate clinical waste from general waste using standard bins and bag colours
Clean shared equipment, such as blood-pressure cuffs or wheelchairs, between residents

Isolation and outbreak watch

When a resident shows infection signs — diarrhoea, a productive cough, or fever — the team needs a shared, rehearsed routine:

Isolate the resident from others as far as practical and dedicate equipment to them
Increase observation frequency and record temperature, intake, and output regularly
Tell the nurse or doctor immediately when symptoms worsen — do not wait for the next shift
Brief every shift so each handover knows who needs extra watching
